About Your Work DayThe -Club Lifeguards/Progressive Swim
Instructors -are responsible for ensuring the safety of campers and
staff members for all waterfront activities at -Chautauqua
Institution's Boys' and Girls' Club. -The Club
Lifeguards/Progressive Swim Instructors -report to the -Club
Waterfront Director. - -Essential Functions:
- Create a safe, welcoming environment in which all program
participants, staff members, and families can fully -participate
-
- Maintain constant surveillance of program participants, staff
members, and other guests in/around the -waterfront -
- Understand and enforce all waterfront rules and -regulations
-
- Responds immediately and appropriately in case of an -emergency
-
- Administers -proper -first aid -when needed at Waterfront
-activities -
- Attends weekly in-service training to maintain rescue -skills -
-
- Provides swim lesson instruction as a Progressive Swim
Instructor
- Provides instruction for operation of canoes and -kayaks -
- Understand and comply with policies and procedures set forth by
Chautauqua Institution and regulations determined by New York State
legislation as related to operating a licensed children's -camp

- May be asked to provide supervision with a camper group during
times when staff are limited -in order to -maintain ratios set by
NYS -regulations -
- When waterfront is adequately maintained in ratio, support
facilitation of land-based activities for camper who do not wish to
participate in aquatic -activities - -Skills and Abilities:

- Must be 16 years of age or older per regulations set by New
York State for licensed children's -camps - -
- Must pass review by the Department of Social Services Central
Register of Abuse and Maltreatment and be acceptable to the local
permit-issuing -official -
- Currently possess or be willing to obtain prior to season
Lifeguard Certification (including first aid, CPR, AED, and
waterfront skills) through the American Red Cross or another
officially recognized provider by New York -State -
- Currently possess or be willing to obtain prior to season Water
Safety Instructor certification through the American Red Cross or
another officially recognized provider by New York -State -
- As of 2022, anyone born in 1988 or after will be required to
obtain proper certification to operate a boat with a motor in New
York -State - -Preferred:
- Experience working with children of diverse -ages -A waterfront
lifeguard certification course will be offered at Chautauqua Health
& Fitness during the month of May. - Space is limited and advanced

course and are hired to work this season as Chautauqua Institution
lifeguards. -About Your ScheduleChautauqua Institution and
Chautauqua Hotel Company offer flexible schedules, full and
part-time, for seasonal employment during summer operations
starting annually each June and concluding in August. - Seasonal
employment may be available earlier (pre-season) and beyond season
(post-season) based on business needs and candidate availability. -
Schedules typically include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as
a requirement. -While you will confirm your final schedule with
management at the time of an interview and offer of employment, you
should generally anticipate the following schedule options for this
position:
- The hiring team must prioritize those who can commit to the
full season but it is more important to set realistic expectations
with your manager about your availability during the interview
process.
- Up to -30 -hours will be required per week to complete the
required -tasks - -
- 3 days of in-person staff training -are required at the
beginning of the -season and virtual trainings may be held prior to
the season
- Work duties are primarily completed Monday through Friday from
9 am to 4 pmAbout Your CompensationCompensation for this position
starts at $14.00/Hour and, with demonstrated experience and
qualifications, candidates may earn up to $17.00/Hour.About the
$250 Referral Bonus ProgramChautauqua Institution's is a talent

$250 referral bonus (less taxes) for active employees referring a
new candidate who is hired and remains employed for at least
