Are you looking for a position that provides variety and multiple learning experiences? UPMC Hamot, a Magnet designated facility within the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, is currently hiring a Regular Full-Time Administrator on Duty. Our Administrators on Duty ensure 24/7 coverage for the hospital.

The AOD is an experienced RN whose expert organizational, analytical, and problem-solving acumen keep the hospital running smoothly. Quick-thinking, adaptable, and always on the move, the AOD is the hospital's point person for capacity management and other daily operations, proactively coordinating patient admissions, discharges, and transfers.

As AOD, you will maintain active communication with all units to identify and minimize any potential problems in hospital function including, but not limited to, patient relations, admissions, throughput, staffing optimization, patient/visitor comfort and safety, and risk management. You will serve at all times as a representative of hospital administration.

Responsibilities:

Assesses, evaluates and provides direction to professional and non-professional staff in all departments regarding situations requiring immediate intervention. Demonstrates excellent communication and problem-solving skills. Collaborates with physicians, departmental managers, and UPMC Hamot Leaders to assure the highest standard of patient care in accordance with UPMC Hamot's mission.

Collaborates with the Executive Team to make the determination to activate the HMC disaster plan and acts as the Disaster Coordinator until administrative support responds.

Evaluates standards of care and standards of practice throughout UPMC Hamot for professional nurses providing care. Interprets and ensures UPMC policies and procedures assuring quality patient care meets departmental, professional and regulatory agency standards. Manages human resources necessary to provide patient care through supervising, mentoring, evaluating, counseling and recommending the termination for non-performing staff.

Demonstrates interest in the development of others and positively impacts the lives of patients/families, peers, and members of the healthcare team through mentoring, education, and knowledge sharing. Mentors and role models quest for continuous learning through formal education and the development of others. Seeks opportunities to share expertise with other member of the healthcare team within and beyond the clinical unit/department.

Demonstrates good judgement and analytical ability to oversee and coordinate patient placement through facilitation of the Admission/Discharge/Transfer (ADT) process in collaboration with the physicians and healthcare team. Uses critical thinking skills to effectively advise and direct healthcare providers in their delivery of patient care while maximizing the efficient use of resources. Identifies problems impacting effective hospital function and initiate corrective action independently and/or through contact with appropriate administrative persons including: Risk Management, Legal Services, Patient Relations, Administrator, and/or the appropriate department director. Monitors and assists in maintaining a physical environment that supports patient, personnel, visitor safety, patient/family comfort, and staff efficiency.

Acts as liaison to outside agencies and media. Demonstrates UPMC Hamot commitment to Service Excellence by understanding the needs of patients, their families, physicians and co-workers and doing what is required the first time, every time by being responsible, sensitive, accurate, timely, coordinated, and through.

Coaches, mentors, and assesses competencies of all staff to enhance and support critical thinking skills. Maintains clinical skills to be able to function as a resource to hospital staff. Responds to RRT, Blue Teams, Trauma alerts and other emergencies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
  • Five years of professional nursing practice, at least two of which were preferably in a management position.
  • Demonstrated competence in, but not limited to, the following skills: communications, coordination, problem solving/critical thinking, hospitality/public relations, team facilitation/collaboration, conflict resolution, flexibility and creativity.
  • Must have basic computer skills.
    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
    • Must be licensed to practice in the State of Pennsylvania.
    • Must be Trauma certified within one year of accepting the position and maintain eight hours of Trauma education annually.
    • ACLS within 1 year of hire or transfer into position.
    • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
    • Registered Nurse (RN)
