Job Description:
Role Summary/Purpose:The Controls Design Engineer will work
collaboratively with other engineers in the planning, design, and
development of the regulation, supervision and optimization
subsystems of the Trip Optimizer product, which is an Energy
Management/Cruise Control system for heavy haul freight
locomotives. This role will leverage and build upon your experience
and expertise to help create state-of-the-art solutions for a
rapidly evolving product line.Essential Responsibilities:
- Mentor and guide junior engineers as they execute the design
and development for locomotive control systems including function
definition, requirements development, dynamic analysis, and failure
modes analysis
- Plan individual and subteam work for assigned projects and
product features as input to integrated project plans
- Provide timely communications on significant issues or
developments
- Drive process improvements and simplification initiatives to
improve quality and productivity
- Review and refine system-level requirements to understand
design intent and reconcile with control system capabilities
- Lead/execute the design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned
projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to
business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program
requirements
- Prepare and present technical design decisions and results to
internal and external customers as necessary
- Ensure proper documentation of technical data generated for the
assigned projects and/or tasks consistent with engineering policies
and procedures
- Prepare invention disclosures to protect the technology that
provides a competitive advantage to the business
- Provide technical support for proposal development
- Design, implement, and tune real-time controllers of an energy
management system for freight locomotive operations.
- Develop and optimize estimators to observe relevant vehicle
states and disturbances.
- Derive, fit, and simulate accurate vehicle dynamics
models.
- Develop production quality Simulink software including design,
documentation, coding, product quality, and
validationQualifications/Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical
Engineering, Physics or Math
- Minimum of 5 - 8 years' engineering experience
- Ability and willingness to support hands-on validation in
simulation laboratory and on-locomotive
- Ability and willingness to travel as requiredDesired
Characteristics:
- Masters or PhD preferred in Robotics, Electrical Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering, or related area or 5+ years industry
experience in controls for robotic systems is preferred.
- Ability to prioritize and manage tradeoffs effectively with a
small team to meet overall objectives
- Demonstrated initiative, resourcefulness, leadership, and
interpersonal skills, with an ability to influence stakeholders,
solve problems, and deliver results
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; effective in
communicating complex concepts and driving resolutions
- 3+ years of experience with Matlab / Simulink
- 3+ years of experience implementing controllers, based on
classical and modern control theory.
- Experience with controls and estimation algorithms and vehicle
dynamics
- Experience with mobile robotics or autonomous vehicles
- Experience with embedded system development and/or complex
software systems
